What is RAM 2027?
RAM 2027 is the UK's packaging rating system run by Pack UK. It rates materials Red, Amber or Green across 8 material categories and 4 recycling stages and the result drives pEPR fee modulation.
What is EU PPWR?
PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) is the EUs near mirror system, live since 12th August 2026. It grades packaging A to C on design for recycling criteria with a 70% threshold and drives future eco modulated fees.
Do I need to comply with both?
If you sell into the UK and EU, yes. The two systems don't always agree. For example, PFAS in food contact packaging triggers an automatic red rating under RAM, while PPWR sets a hard concentration limit from 12th August 2026 with a tighter threshold for food contact packaging specifically. a format that passes UK RAM today may not clear EU thresholds once you export.
